It’s Holy Week but not everyone can make it to la playa…so, a backyard pool party it is! These tools sell like hotcakes during this time of the year in Nicaragua!
Baseball has been the national sport in Nicaragua for decades. Soccer has made inroads but how refreshing it is to see kids still playing America’s pastime in Central America.
We spent the week in Cárdenas, Rivas. It’s a quaint little fishing town on the south edge of Nicaragua (and Lake Nicaragua – which is the tenth largest lake in the world).
There are some really nice views of Ometepe.
Interestingly enough, Costa Rica is just a stone’s throw away, the border being separated by a rickety old fence.
An hour up the road towards Colón, in the Los Ángeles area, there are other real nice views of Ometepe.
.
Cárdenas, Rivas is a wonderful place to visit – the people are really friendly and there abounds some breathtaking scenery from the Nicaraguan countryside. It is a real gem amongst the many options for tourism in Nicaragua.

Nicaragua has quite a variety of people, as these two little girls from San Judas, Managua clearly demonstrate. On the east coast, black and indigenous people are predominant. On the west coast, mestizo is more common. In the northeastern part of the country is where you will a lot of the “Chele nicas” like the young one of the right in the picture.
Nicaragua has a great quantity of street sellers – people who make a living selling a great variety of items from door to door. It’s also common that each on of them has a distinct sound, so to speak, as they call out their products. Kind of an audio trademark that he (or she) himself (or herself) has invented. Remember the girl who sells donuts? [click here] Well this guy sells popcorn (C$5 a bag) and cotton candy (C$7 a bag).
La Gastronomía del Buzo – #1 Managua Restaurant Review | TripAdvisor Top Rated
La Cueva del Buzo: #1 Rated Restaurant in Managua (TripAdvisor Review)
We had the chance to visit the #1 rated restaurant in Managua, according to TripAdvisor. The experience was quite good, and here’s my take on it. The proprietor is an excellent host — as others have mentioned, he takes time to explain every dish in detail. Our waiter was also very knowledgeable about the menu and wine list, offering thoughtful suggestions.
It was a very busy night, and the restaurant seemed understaffed, so the service fell short of expectations — we even had to pour our own wine. That’s not what one would expect from the top-rated restaurant in Managua. Prices are on the higher side, but the food quality was impressive. We tried the Filetes Silvia and Cruzando el Mar Rojo, both beautifully presented with creative flavors.
Rating: 8/10
Bigger portions and smoother service could easily raise the score to a 9. Reservations are recommended, especially if you plan to visit on weekends or special occasions.
Washing your vehicle is a no-brainer in Nicaragua. You get it hand washed and dried, vacuumed (or hand swept), dashboard and tires shined up…this one in Managua cost me C$70 (a little less than $3) and takes about 20 minutes. Definitely, something you should get done every week! You can get a light waxing for another C$70-75.
