El Güegüense (also known as Macho Ratón) is a satirical drama and was the first literary work of post-Columbian Nicaragua. It is regarded as one of Latin America‘s most distinctive colonial-era expressions and as Nicaragua’s signature folkloric masterpiece combining music, dance and theater.[1] There was also a monument built in the center of a rotonda (roundabout) in Managua, in its honor.[2] El Güegüense is performed during the feast of San Sebastián in Diriamba (Carazo department) from January 17 to the 27th.

If you want absolutely the best burger in Nicaragua, go to Flayers on the highway between Managua and Masaya. That is a ton of meat for C$69.50 ($3.16) and ice cold beers and cokes. You can’t beat it!

La Casona Coffee Shop
I had a few moments to spend in La Casona Coffee Shop in San Marcos, Carazo, Nicaragua. The sign said “where cool people hang out”, I heard my calling and took a seat. I had some really good coffee – a double espresso with milk (macchiato) and a great piece of chocolate cake. Good chocolate cake is hard to come by in Nicaragua, although these type of coffee shops are improving things a bit. The coffee was C$20 (under a buck) and the cake was C$45 (about two bucks). If you are in San Marcos, go! Oh yeah – they have live music on weekend evenings too.
Tuve unos momentos libres en La Casona Coffee Shop en San Marcos, Carazo, Nicaragua. El rótulo dice “donde se encuentra la gente cool”. Supe que era mi invitación así que entré. Pedí un doble espresso con leche (macchiato) y un pedazo de torta de chocolate. Una buena torta de chocolate es difícil encontrar en Nicaragua, aunque estos tipos de negocios han mejorado la panorama muchísimo. El café me costó C$20 (menos que un dólar) y la torta C$45 (como $2). Si pasás por San Marcos, andate allí! Oh también tienen música en vivo los fines de semana.

Mango season
Mango season is upon us. People start eating them green (with salt) and in quantities that are surprising. As the fruit turns from hard green to a soft yellow and orangish color, the enthusiasm reaches it’s almost euphoric climax and then starts to fade and proud Mango tree owners then start giving them away to wanting (at the start and then a few weeks later weary from many mangos) visitors.
I personally don’t like to eat mangos very much. I personally prefer to eat drink them in liquid form as fruit juice or something like that.
My wife claims that I said, while sleeping last night: “No me des mango. No me gustan” which, when translated means: “Don’t give me any mangos. I don’t like them.”

Café en Masaya, Nicaragua
As could be expected from an excellent coffee producing country like Nicaragua, there are some nice little coffee shops scattered around the country. In Masaya, we found this one called “El Esfuerzo”. Check out the nice selection of pastries and the coffee machine that served up a strong macchiato (C$15 or $0.75).
Como es de esperar en un país que produce tan excelente café como Nicaragua, hay muchas panaderías por todo el país que sirven excelente café. En Masaya, encontramos este que se llama “El Esfuerzo”. Mirá la selección de panes y esa máquina de café que me sirvió un excelente y fuerte macciato (C$15 or $0.75).

Do you remember that place in Granada, Nicaragua? “a nice little place in Granada, Nicaragua called El Garaje. It’s located at 512 Calle Corral. It’s quite a quaint little place with an eclectic fare of food.” Well, I was back yesterday and had the pulled pork sandwich. Looks tasty huh? It was!!! Spicy and good! It was C$100 (a little less than $5). The menu is varied and changes, to some degree, daily. There are quite a few tasty vegetarian options. Paul Aquin appears to be the entrepreneur of this nice little place. On a scale of 1 to 10, it’s an 8!!!
¿Se acuerdan de aquel lugar en Granada, Nicaragua? “un lugar que se llama El Garaje, en Granada, Nicaragua. Su dirección es: 512 Calle Corral. Es un lugar bien bonito con una variedad eclectica de comida.” Bueno, ayer fuimos de vuelta y me lancé ese sandwich de cerdo en barbacoa. ¿Sabroso no? Picante y rico!!! Costó C$100 (un poco menos que $5). El menú es variado y cambia, hasta cierto grado, diario. Hay opciones sabrosas para vegetarianos también. El dueño y chef es Paul Acquin. En una escala de 1 a 10, le doy ¡¡¡un 8!!!

Aquí está un rico almuerzo en Papa John’s de Nicaragua. Es el combo de ensalada y pizza (entre las 11-4 p.m.) La ensalada puede ser mejor (yo quité los tomates y los pepinos). La pizza está riquísima – doble tocino. Comí todo con un té helado. Cuesta casí $7 (C$145). Hay dos Papa John’s en Nicaragua: en Las Galerías de Santo Domingo y en Masaya.
Here is another savory lunch at Papa John’s in Nicaragua. It’s the pizza and salad combo (between 11-4 p.m.). The salad was probably better in many one’s opinion (I took off the tomatos and cucumbers). The pizza was great – doble bacon!! I ate it all and washed it down with an iced tea. It costs almost $7 (C$145). There are two Papa John’s in Nicaragua: in the Galerias de Santo Domingo and in Masaya.
This is called “La Escuela Normal” [the Normal School] outside of Matagalpa, Nicaragua. It’s where future teachers are trained as such. They are also known to have very muscular legs.

Check out these guys making baskets in El Valle de La Laguna, Masaya, Nicaragua. They start by splitting bamboo and end up with those baskets. On the wholesale market they go for about C$10 each ($0.45). Did someone say ‘Walmart’?
