El Realejo and the Pirates

Nicaragua has a history of pirates. For instance, Roberto Clemente, a famous right fielder for the Pittsburgh Pirates, died in a plane crash while en route to deliver supplies and aid to earthquake victims in the capital of Nicaragua, Managua. Another Nicaraguan pirate (or soon to be) is Heiron Montalban. The young 17-year-old outfielder, from Pearl Lagoon (Laguna de Perlas) was recently signed, also by the Pittsburgh Pirates. Supposedly he was 1 of 5 Nicaraguans signed in the MLB in the month of June 2019.

However, I am writing about a different kind of pirate…English pirates, Spanish pirates, Caribbean pirates. Nicaragua has been bludgeoned by pirates, left and right…from the Caribbean side in places like Corn Islands (Islas del Maíz), through the heart of Nicaragua and the famous lake Cocibolca (the 10th largest in the Americas) to Granada and from Pacific coast incursions.

In the small, forgotten town of El Realejo, Chinandega, near the Pacific coast, there are ruins that tell the story of pirate invasions here as well. El Realejo, founded in 1532, was for some time Nicaragua’s main port. However, it became the object of pirate attacks, as the old buildings and signage reveal. The San Francisco Convent was built during the period of 1525-1535. It was restored in 1685. However, it was victim of looting and ravaged by fire in 1623 by John Davis, in 1681 by Bartolomew Sharp, in 1685 by Edward Davis Townby, Swan Knite and William Dampier.

A few years ago, two skeletons were found in the shallow grave in the last picture here. Who were they? I don’t know. They were exhumed and buried in a nearby cemetery.

On a lighter note, according to investigations (I saw it myself in a museum in Virginia City, Nevada), Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) also passed through the port of El Realejo on his trip to California, during the famous Gold Rush of the 1800s.

No sé.
