Don’t come over hear talking about people….

Translation: “Don’t come to me talking about things that don’t agree with God.  Talk to me about Christ, for the well being of my soul.”

Written on the wall of a rural house near Mombacho (Caña de Castilla), Granada.

The Pochote tree (Bombacopsis quinata) is a large, deciduous tree native to Central and South America, including Nicaragua. It is commonly found in dry and deciduous forests and can grow up to 30 meters in height.

The Pochote tree has a thick, cylindrical trunk with a diameter of up to two meters. The trunk is covered in spines that help protect it from animals and insects. The tree produces large, green leaves that can reach up to 30 centimeters in length. It also produces flowers that are white, pink, or yellow in color and have a pleasant fragrance. The tree’s fruit is a large, woody capsule that contains numerous seeds.

In Nicaragua, the Pochote tree has a variety of uses. Its wood is strong and durable and is used for furniture, construction, and carving. The tree’s bark and leaves are also used in traditional medicine to treat a variety of ailments, including fevers, wounds, and digestive issues. Additionally, the tree’s flowers and fruit are used in culinary applications, such as flavoring beverages and desserts.

Here is a dangerously looking but quite common tree in Nicaragua called Pochote.  It is not ‘climber friendly’ as you can see from its impressive thorns.

Exploring the Isletas de Granada on Lake Nicaragua

Our day exploring the Isletas de Granada on the vast Lake Nicaragua, also known as Lake Cocibolca, turned into a memorable adventure despite the unexpected weather. January usually brings bright, sunny days, but this time the skies were overcast and soft rain showers passed through more than once. Still, the charm of the islands and the warmth of the Nicaraguan atmosphere made it a day to remember.

A Peaceful Journey through the Isletas de Granada

The small boat glided smoothly between dozens of lush, green islets that dotted the lake near the colonial city of Granada. Each one offered something unique: private homes, small restaurants, and vibrant birdlife resting among the trees. The silence was broken only by the hum of the motor and the gentle call of herons flying overhead. It’s easy to see why these islands are one of the most serene and sought-after attractions in Nicaragua.

Local Life and Traditional Flavors at the Isletas de Granada

After a relaxing boat ride, we stopped for a simple yet delicious lunch of freshly caught fish, served with rice, plantains, and a refreshing drink. The flavor of the meal, prepared Nicaraguan-style, perfectly matched the tranquil views across the shimmering water. Even with the gentle drizzle, the air felt alive with the sound of nature. For travelers, the Isletas de Granada offer a rare blend of nature, culture, and comfort—a slice of authentic lake life just minutes from the city.

(Isletas de Granada)

Isletas de Granada

1 great pitcher: Vicente Padilla

Vicente Padilla, originally from Chinandega, Nicaragua, has been pitching here in the ‘professional’ league in Nicaragua.  His team, the Chinandega Tigers, avoided a sweep yesterday in Granada.  Padilla is out of the country (presumably signing his $1.5 million minor league contract with the Boston Red Sox) but the Tigers hope to have him back to even up the best of 5 series.

Finca Tilgüe (Tilgüe Farm) is better known as Ojo de Agua.

It’s a wonderful destination in Ometepe, Nicaragua.  It is a crystal clear natural spring swimming hole, located on the Finca Tilgüe (Tilgüe Farm), about a mile (1.3 km) from the Santo Domingo beach.

The spring gives birth to the Buen Suceso River.  That water is said to be medicinal.  Although it is cool and refreshing, its therapeutic effects are felt after a swim in it.

There are two semi-natural swimming pools surrounded by thatch-roof huts as well as trails to wander into the forest.  Drinks and snacks (such as that Coco Loco) are available.  You can also bring your own stuff.

Admission is $2.00 per person and it is open daily from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

On a scale of 1 to 10, this is a 10!  A real gem!

Finca Tilgüe(大家更爱叫Ojo de Agua)。
