1 happy hop-a-long rooster

I met a man in Barrio Las Torres in Managua, Nicaragua who really loves his pet. Someone took after the rooster with a machete and got one of his legs. Seeing his feathered friend in distress, the man cleaned the wound and fitted him with a little boot. As you can see in the picture, he has another more stylish one waiting to fit him. The rooster is eternally grateful for this good act.
Pollo Estrella
There are a few Pollo Estrella restaurants in the Managua area: the airport, Galerías de Santo Domingo, Plaza Inter, Las Americas and in a few other Managua locations (I went to the one from the Texaco Guanacaste about 3 blocks toward the lake) It might be called a ‘poor man’s Tip-Top’ in reference to the competition. However, having eaten here for the first time, I must say I would prefer Pollo Estrella to Tip-Top. They had good service, a good play area for the kids and prices that are much more favorable than Tip-Top (as you can see in the picture). We ordered to the two sandwich special for C$140 ($6.45). The chicken was a breast portion and actually pretty good. As far as chicken and fast food in Nicaragua go, I’ll give Pollo Estrella an 8 out of 10.
All on board….
Managua, Nicaragua has some nice public transportation. Where else can you get a ride on a truck like this for C$2.50 (about $0.15). Huh? Where else?
Huh? Decime…¿dónde?
Jimmy “Three Fingers” Alabama Rib Shack Bar and Grill
Jimmy’s is a must when you visit Granada, Nicaragua. You will now be served by Suzanne, a bubbly woman hailing from California, via Costa Rica. The BBQ sauce that Jimmy whips up is off the charts! I was there a week ago with some hard core chicken wingers from NY and they said that his wings were some of the best they have had!!! Check out the steam rolling of the wings in the 2nd picture!!! The half rack of ribs and steak also look very appealing!!! Ben and Sandra Evans, hailing from the island of Ometepe, were salivating as they awaited this treat! I was too but I am not in the picture (as I never am). There’s Jimmy, Suzanne and Mr. Bartender.
Give it a try! You can see the prices on the board there. You won’t regret it!!!!
No te arrepentirás!!!

You can get a shoeshine in about any park in Nicaragua for pretty cheap. It’s better than paying $7 in an airport in the U.S. This one, in the park in Chinandega, Nicaragua, cost me C$10 (about $0.50). Before and after….
Surfing in Nicaragua
Nicaragua has its fair share of top class surf spots. The country is famous among surfers for the off shore breeze that blows most of the year on the southern part of its coastline. The breeze results from the geographic peculiarity of having the 10 largest lake in the world separated from the pacific ocean by only a narrow strip of land. This creates the right conditions for winds to consistently sculpt Nicaraguan waves into the kind of peaks that surfers get excited about.
The various surf spots in Nicaragua offer real estate at various levels of ‘maturity’. Popoyo Nicaragua for example is relatively remote. It’s only accessible by dirt road and the nearest decent sized grocery store is over 1hr away. These factors make it a great place for early-in real state investing. Given the fact that CNN has classed the wave in the top 10 on the globe, it’s likely the area will continue to receive attention.
For surf real estate that is located closer to the kind of amenities and services one would expect from a more mature destination, check out Yankee a little further south. It’s still only dirt road access but the road is maintained in good condition year round. Yankee is only a short drive to the cafes, restaurants and grocery stores of San Juan del Sur.
If you want access to good surf but want to live in town then check out options in San Juan del Sur itself, overlooking the Madera break nearby or Remanso. San Juan del has evolved into Nicaragua’s prime tourism center on the Pacific coast and an important hub for real estate activity. It’s a charming fishing village set in a half moon bay framed by two dramatic headlands jutting out into the sea. After a day of surfing make sure you head back into to town for one of San Juan del Sur’s famous sunsets.
It’s still possible to get a piece of surf real estate in Nicaragua at ground floor prices, especially if you are prepared to purchase in the more remote areas. And right now it’s a buyers market for property in Nicaragua and cash buyers have tremendous amounts of negotiating power. Spend the time to research the opportunities and you may pick up a surf property at a bargain price.
Pupusas in Chinandega
Pupusas are an original from El Salvador. However, since Chinandega, Nicaragua, located in the northwest part of the country, is somewhat close to El Salvador (by water or by land) there is a crossover of food. In the central park, you will find a ‘Pupusería’ where you can get these thick tortillas filled with pork, cheese, refried beans or any combination of the three. Then, you can put a pickled cabbage salad and a spicy tomato sauce on them and you will be good to go! They cost C$10 ($0.45) each and usually two or three is enough!
