I saw a sign urging me ‘not to travel to get my quesillos’ (string cheese smothered with onions in vinegar and covered with sweet cream and sprinkled with salt, carefully wrapped in a tortilla or served on a plate) but rather eat them there in León (near El Colegio La Salle). OK. I accepted. They were good. If you like La Paz Centro quesillos, you will be pleased. If you prefer Nagarote quesillos, like I do, you will give it a 6 on a scale of 1 to 10. If all else fails and you are not traveling to Managua, go ahead and give it a try. It will get you out of a ‘I want quesillo’ jam.

Vi un rótulo que me decía que no ‘viajara para conseguir mis quesillos’ (ya sabés que es un quesillo).  Mejor los conseguiera en León (cerca del Colegio La Salle).  Va pues.  Acepté.  Estaban buenos.  Si a vos te gustan los quesillos de La Paz Centro, te van a gustar.  Si preferís quesillos de Nagarote, como a mi me gustan, de 1 a 10 los darás un 6.  Bueno, para sacarte de apuros y si no tenés un viaje hacia Managua, andate a Quesillos Típicos de Mi tierra.  Quizá te satisfagan cuando sentís “YO QUIERO UN QUESILLO”.

I had a commitment to fulfill in El Bejuco, Chinandega on a Sunday morning so I headed out from Chinandega and arrived. All having been said and done, to my surprise I was invited to have a ‘seafood’ platter for lunch. It consisted of three different types: crawdads, small river shrimp and fish. Rice, beans and tortillas were added as filler. The hostess explained that she had sent her son out to the river the day before and he spent two hours trying to get some decent sized crawdads. He did indeed! They were deeeee-liiiiiii-cious! And big too!

Tuve un compromiso en El Bejuco, Chinandga un domingo por la mañana así que salí de Chinandega y llegué. Habiendo cumplido mis deberes, y para sorpresa mía, me invitaron a saborear ‘fruta del mar’ para el almuerzo. Consistía de tres diferentes tipos de ‘mariscos’ o ‘riíscos’: camerón de rió, camarones chiquitos de río y pescado. Por supuesto arroz, frijoles y tortillas también venían en el paquete. La señora que me invitó explicó que, el día anterior, había mandado a su hijo al río para buscar. Pasó dos horas en un esfuerzo por encontrar los camerones de río más grande. Sí que tuvo éxito! Eran deeeeeeee-liiiiiiiii-ciosos! Y grandes también!

Would you like to eat the best fried chicken in Masaya, Nicaragua? Welcome to Verdi (there are two in town). From the Petronic it’s 75 mtrs south (from the Tip Top roundabout, head south about 1 1/2 blocks). Everybody says they have the best chicken in town. I decided on the steak with jalapeño sauce. The one in the picture cost C$83 (about $4.00). It was tender and flavorful! I would recommend this place…it’s lined up as fast food but has some really good options on the menu. It’s a winner! We went with our friends Wesley and Lesley, hailing from Alaska.

¿Te gustaría comer el mejor pollo rostizado de Masaya, Nicaragua? Bienvenido a Verdi (hay dos en Masaya). De la Petronic, son 75 metros al sur (de la rotonda Tip Top, 1 1/2 c. al sur). Todo el mundo dice que tienen el mejor pollo rostizado en la ciudad. Yo opté por el churrasco a la jalapeño. El que se mira allí costó C$83 ($4.00). La carne era suave y tenía buen sabor. Yo recomiendo este lugar…está establecido como comida rápida pero tiene unas muy buenas opciones. Es un ganador!!! Fuimos con nuestros amigos Wesley y Lesley de Alaska, EEUU.

Our good friends Alejandra and Esmirna (from Tijuana, Mexico) cooked us up some stuffed peppers the other day. They were…ummm ummm delicious. It’s hard to come up with some ingredientes here like chiles poblanos, cilantro, chipotle, etc. but they sure did a good job! Ándale!

Nuestras buenas amigas Alejandra y Esmirna (de Tijuana, México) cocinaron unos ricos chiles rellenos el otro día. Eran…mmmm, mmmm ricos! Cuesta hallar algunos ingredientes para la cocina mexicana…i.e. chiles poblanos, cilantro, chipotle, etc. pero hicieron un intento estupendo! Ándale!

I think that’s what the place is called – Coach House Coffee. It’s right in that little plaza by PriceSmart. I ordered a mocha extra strong and got this! I was pleasantly surprised, although it is a little pricey at $3.40. Apparently it’s the same company that has the little coffee shop inside PriceSmart too.

Creo que el lugar se llama así – Coach House Coffee. Está allí por el parqueo de PriceSmart. Pedí un café mocha extra fuerta y me dieron esto! Una buena sorpresa aunque un poco caro a $3.40. Aparentemente es la misma compañías que tiene un café a dentro de PriceSmart.
